Perhydrothiazepine derivatives of formula (I): Image (I) (in which R1 represents an optionally substituted alkyl group, R2 represents a carboxy-protecting group or hydrogen and R4 and R5 are hydrogen, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or heterocyclic) can be prepared by reacting together compounds of formulae (II) and (III): Image (II) Image (III) and then reacting the product with a haloacetic acid ester and, if necessary, removing one or both carboxy-protecting groups. The resulting compounds have valuable ACE inhibitory activity.
