ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for the preparation of compounds of the formula: Image (I) wherein R and R1 independently represent a lower alkyl group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms or, taken together may with the adjacent nitrogen atom, represent a pyrrolidino, piperidino or morpholino radical and R2 represents a lower alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, which comprises treating an .alpha.-l or .beta.-dl aminobutanol of the formula: Image (II) wherein R, R1 and R2 are as defined above, with an oxidizing agent selected from the group consisting of derivatives or hexavalent chromium, derivatives of trivalent cobalt, manganese dioxide, alkali metal manganates, permangan- ates, bismuthates and periodates and lead tetraacetate in an acidic medium. The compounds of formula I are valuable intermediates in the preparation of compounds which display analgesic activity.
