ABSTRACT phosphorothioates and phenylphosphonothioates are prepared by reacting phosphorochloridothioates and phenylphosphonochloridothioates with alkali metal salts of hydroxy-substituted carbocyclic or heterocyclic aromatic compounds in presence of a liquid reaction medium and, as catalysts, (1) a quaternary ammonium or phosphonium salt and (2) an organic, sterically unhindered, nucleophilic, tertiary amine, excludive of 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane and N-substituted diazoles. By using this catalyst system, high yields of high purity product are obtainable in short reaction times.
