ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Novel platinum catalysts and a method for their preparation are disclosed. They are prepared by treating catalysts of platinum metal with salts of sulfurous acid or with sulfur compounds which liberate sulfurous acid in the presence of an acid. The treatment is conducted in the presence of hydroxylammonium salts in acid medium and in the absence of oxidizing agents capable of oxidizing sulfurous acid to form sulfate. The resulting catalysts are useful in preparing hydroxylamine.
