ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE High molecular weight polyamides with at least ten aliphatically bound carbon atoms per carbonamide group, suitable for the melt-film coating method involving post-condensation, are prepared by a precipitation procedure. The starting material is uncontrolled polyamides with a relative viscosity of between 1.7 and 2.0 (measured in 0.5% m-cresol solution at 25°C), containing from 0 to 0.2% by weight of phosphoric acid. A hot ethanol solu- tion of the polyamide is cooled. At any time after the solution is cooled to the saturation limit temperature, from 0.3 to 1.2% by weight of phosphoric acid based on the polyamide is added to the solution or the suspension.
