A process for preparing quaternaray ammonium salts Abstract of the Disclosure Compounds of the formula Image in which R1 is long-chain alkyl and R2 and R3 are each lower alkyl are prepared by quaternising amines of the formula R1R2R3N with ethylene oxide in the presence of phosphoric acid. This gives the quaternary compounds in vitrually quantitative yield. The compounds are particularly suitable for use in hair cosmetics.
