Abstract: The invention relates to a solid base having improved properties, particularly good catalytic performance. The base is prepared by reacting alumina and an alkali metal hydroxide at a temperature of 200 to 500°C and then reacting the resulting mixture with an alkali metal at a temperature of 180 to 350°C or reacting water-containing alumina and an alkali metal in an amount which corresponds to the molar equivalent of the water contained in the alumina at a temperature in a range between the melting point of the alkali metal and 500°C and then reacting the reaction product with an additional alkali metal at a temperature of 180 to 350°C. The base is useful for catalyzing several standard reactions, particularly The isomerization of olefins.
