The sulfonation of arylphosphines, i.e. mono-, di-, oligo- and polyphosphines which contain at least one aromatic radical capable of being sulfonated, is carried out according to the invention in the presence of a Lewis acid. The novel process avoids side-reactions, in par- ticular the formation of phosphine oxides. In working up the sulfonation mixture the Lewis acid can be removed together with the sulfuric acid.
