ABSTRACT A process for converting a thallium(I) compound to a thallium(III) compound suitable for use in oxythallation of unsaturated organic compounds such as olefin, acetelynic and carboxyl compounds by contacting a gas containing oxygen at a partial pressure of at least 10 kPa with a reaction medium at pH 9.6 or greater and containing a thallium(I) compound and a peroxygen compound in an amount equivalent to oxidize at least 1% of the thallium(I) to thallium(III). The process provides an economical method to oxidize thallium(I) to thal- lium(III) with oxygen at a lower pressure than that described in the prior art.
