This invention provides a process for reducing an exocyclic double bond at the 5-position of a thiazolidinedione moiety of a thiazolidinedione precursor comprising the steps of: a) preparing a solution or suspension of the thiazolidinedione precursor in a non-ether solvent medium with a base, and b) combining the solution or suspension with a dithionite source. Preferred solvent media include aqueous N,N-dimethylformamide. Sodium dithionite is a preferred dithionite source. In particular the application discloses preparation processes for Pioglitazone, Rosilitazone and Troglitazone.

L'invention concerne un procédé permettant de diminuer une liaison double exocyclique en position 5 d'une fraction thiazolidinedione d'un précurseur de thiazolidinedione, comprenant les étapes suivantes : a) préparer une solution ou une suspension du précurseur de thiazolidinediode dans un milieu de solvant sans éther avec une base, et b) combiner la solution ou la suspension avec une source dithionite. Les milieux solvants préférés comprennent du N,N-diméthylformamide aqueux. Le dithionite de sodium est la source dithionite préférée. L'application concerne notamment des procédés de préparation de Pioglitazone, de Rosilitazone et de Troglitazone.
