The invention relates to a process for preparing a solid sulfate cake usable in the preparation of titanium dioxide, in which process a titaniferous feedstock which contains trivalent iron is reduced thermally in a solid state by means of a reducing gas so that the trivalent iron is reduced to bivalent iron without the formation of metallic iron, whereby a titaniferous material having a low ferric iron content is obtained, and this material is reacted with sulfuric acid to form a solid sulfate cake. The invention also relates to a process for preparing titanium dioxide.

L'invention porte sur une méthode pour préparer un gâteau de sulfate solide, utile pour la préparation de dioxyde de titane, procédé dans lequel une alimentation titanifère renfermant du fer trivalent est réduite thermiquement en un état solide à l'aide d'un gaz réducteur, de telle façon que le fer trivalent soit réduit en fer bivalent, sans formation de fer métallique; on obtient ainsi une matière titanifère avec une faible teneur en ion ferrique, matière que l'on fait réagir avec l'acide sulfurique pour former un gâteau solide de sulfate. L'invention présente également une méthode pour préparer le dioxyde de titane.
