Process to prepare a trioxepane compound of the following formula (I) comprising less than 3.5 wt% of dialkyl peroxide based on the total amount of peroxides, said process comprising the steps of reacting a glycol compound of the formula R3CHOH-CH2-C(CH3)2OH with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of an acid to form a glycol hydroperoxide, purifying the glycol hydroperoxide, reacting the purified glycol hydroperoxide with a ketone or aldehyde of the formula R1R2CO in the presence of an acid to form the trioxepane compound, and purifying the trioxepane compound, wherein R1, R2, and R3 are independently selected from hydrogen and a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbyl group, with the proviso that if R1 and R2 are both methyl groups, R3 is not hydrogen. Initiator compositions comprising the so-prepared trioxepane compound are characterised by a high safe processing temperature in combination with a good crosslink efficiency.
L~invention concerne un procédé destiné à la préparation d~un composé de trioxépane répondant de la formule suivante (I) comprenant moins de 3,5 % en poids d~un peroxyde de dialkyle sur la base de la quantité totale de peroxydes, ledit procédé comprenant les étapes consistant à faire réagir un glycol répondant à la formule R3CHOH-CH2-C(CH3)2OHavec du peroxyde d'hydrogène en présence d'un acide pour former un hydroperoxyde de glycol, purifier l'hydroperoxyde de glycol, faire réagir l'hydroperoxyde de glycol purifié avec une cétone ou un aldéhyde répondant à la formule R1R2CO en présence d'un acide pour former le composé de trioxépane, et purifier le composé de trioxépane ; R1, R2 et R3 sont indépendamment choisis parmi un atome d~hydrogène et un groupe hydrocarbyle substitué ou non substitué, à condition que si R1 et R2 représentent tous les deux des groupes méthyle, R3 ne représente pas un atome d~hydrogène. Les compositions d~initiateur comprenant le composé de trioxépane ainsi préparé sont caractérisées par une température élevée de transformation sans danger conjuguée à une bonne efficacité de réticulation.
