There is described a viral decontamination process for the preparation of essentially virus free natural substances which involves treating the natural substance with a mixture comprising a halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon and an lower alcohol and, optionally, water. The treatment kills off or inactivates coated and uncoated viruses, and may be used for example in the treatment of organ preparations.
