ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Corrosion of metals in contact with alkaline solutions is prevented by adding thereto an effective amount of a corrosion inhibitor which is either an ammonium or alkali metal polysulfide or a mixture of an ammonium or alkali metal sulfide and elemental sulfur. Preferably, the alkali metal polysulfide or alkali metal sulfide is a sodium polysulfide or sulfide. The corrosion inhibitor is particularly useful in acid gas scrubbing processes where either alkali metal salts and amine compound promoters are employed or amines are employed.
