A process for producing 1,2,4-butanetriol safely, easily, and inexpensively without posing a problem concerning wastewater. At least one of a malic diester, 3-hydroxy-.gamma.-butyrolactone, and a 3,4-dihydroxybutanoic ester respectively represented by formulae (I) is reduced with sodium boron hydride in an organic solvent to obtain 1,2,4-butanetriol, represented by formula (II). When optically active isomers are used as the starting compounds, substantially no racemization occurs during the reduction and optically active 1,2,4-butanetriol is obtained.
L'invention porte sur un procédé qui permet de produire 1,2,4-butanetriol de manière sûre, facile et bon marché, sans rencontrer les problèmes liés aux eaux usées. Au moins un diester malique, ou un 3-hydroxy-.gamma.-butyrolactone, ou un ester 3,4-dihydroxybutanoïque des formules (I) est réduit avec un borohydrure de sodium dans un solvant organique pour obtenir le 1,2,4-butanetriol de la formule (II). Lorsque des isomères optiquement actifs sont utilisés en tant que composés de départ, sensiblement aucune racémisation ne survient pendant la réduction et l'on obtient un 1,2,4-butanetriol optiquement actif.
