Pure 1,4-dienes are produced at high rates of reaction by reacting a conjugated diene and an alpha monoolefin at a temperature below 70 °C in the presence of a catalyst comprising a 1,3-bis-(diphenylphosphino) propane ligand of Co(II)(acetylacetonate )2 or Co(II) (acetylacetonate)3 or CoCl2 in combination with a dialkylaluminum halide such as diethylaluminum chloride.
