ABSTRACT: A process for producing 1,4-naphthoquinone by vapour phase catalytic oxidation of naphthalene comprises catalytically reacting the naphthalene with oxygen-containing gas in a fixed catalytic layer of a catalyst composed essentially of catalytic components of vanadium oxide, an alkali metal sulfate and an alkali metal pyrosulfate carried on an inert carrier, wherein the oxygen-contain- ing gas which is supplied to the fixed catalytic layer of the catalyst heated to a temperature of at least 330C,contains at least 1 ppm of sulfur trioxide at the entrance of the fixed catalyst layer.
