ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A 2-Substituted-benzanilide is produced by reacting an alkyl 2-substituted-benzoate having the formula Image wherein X represents halogen, or lower alkyl group and R re- presents a lower alkyl group with an aniline having the formula Image wherein Y represents hydrogen atom, alkyl, alkoxy, alkenyloxy, alkynyloxy, benzyloxy or halobenzyloxy group in the presence of an alcoholate in a solvent which is difficultly azeotropically distilled with the by-product alcohol.
