A process for synthesizing 3,4'dihydroxybenzophenone by reacting meta- hydroxybenzoic acid and phenol in the presence of a Lewis acid, and a protonic acid. Upon completion of the reaction the Lewis and protonic acids are removed and then the reaction product of 3,4'dihydroxybenzophenone is contacted with water (at temperature not greater than 10 C) and ammonium hydroxide followed by filtration. Thereafter the filtered material can be reacted with an acetylating agent in the presence of inorganic acid and activated carbon to form 3,4' diacetoxybenzophenone.

L'invention porte sur un procédé de synthèse de 3,4'-dihydroxybenzophénone par la réaction d'acide métahydroxybenzoïque et de phénol en présence d'un acide de Lewis, et d'un acide protonique. Lors de l'achèvement de la réaction, les acides de Lewis et protonique sont éliminés, puis le produit de la réaction de la 3,4'-dihydroxybenzophénone est mis en contact avec de l'eau (à une température non supérieure à 10°C) et de l'hydroxyde d'ammonium en faisant suivre par une filtration. Ensuite, la matière filtrée peut être amenée à réagir avec un agent d'acétylation en présence d'acide inorganique et de charbon actif pour former la 3,4'-diacétoxybenzophénone.
