ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for producing 4'-(2-carboxyethyl)phenyl trans-4-aminomethylcyclohexanecarboxylate or the acid-addition salts thereof comprising selectively hydrolyzing one of the carboxylate bonds in a compound represented by the formula (IV): Image (IV) wherein R1 is an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, a substituted alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms in the alkyl moiety thereof, an aryl group, an alkoxy group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms or an amino group, an alkoxy group having 1 atom, an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, an aryl group, an acyl group, an alkoxycarbonyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms in the alkoxy moiety thereof or a cyano group and compounds represented by the formula (IV) above useful as intermediates in producing 4'-(2-carboxyethyl)phenyl trans-4- aminomethylcyclohexanecarboxylate or the acid-addition salts thereof.
