Abstract of the Disclosure Novel and improved simple process for producing 4-biphenylylacetic acid or its salt useful as an anti- inflammatory and analgesic agent. The process starts from 4-biphenylylaldehyde and goes through a compound of the formula Image or Image wherein R represents a substituted or unsubstituted phenyl or lower alkyl group, R1 represents a hydrogen atom, a lower alkyl group or a carboxy-lower alkyl group, X represents an oxygen or sulfur atom and Y represents a sulfur atom or -NH-.
