ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Disclosed herein is a process for producing 6-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid which is used as a monomer for producing aromatic polyesters having an ability of forming liquid crystals, comprising oxidizing 2-(2- hydroxy-2-propyl)naphthalene-6-carboxylic acid or a mixture of 2-(2-hydroxy-2-propyl)naphthalene-6-carbox- ylic acid and 2-(2-hydroperoxy-2-propyl)naphthalene-6- carboxylic acid by hydrogen peroxide in acetonitrile and/or dioxane in the presence of an inorganic acid.
