Producing 7-aminocephem compounds or salts thereof by cultivating in a nutrient medium a microorganism capable of producing a 7-aminocephem compound of the formula: (see formula I) wherein R is acetoxy, hydroxy or hydrogen, and recovering the 7-aminocephem compound (I) or a salt thereof from the culture. Preferably, the micro- organism is a fungal strain belonging to the species Acremonium chrysogenum. A DNA fragment which contains the promotor activity region of an Acremonium chrysogenum alkalene protease gene is also disclosed as well as a cephalosporin C acylase a gene coding for same and a vector containing the gene are also disclosed.
