In the production of a catalyst containing a catalytically active Mo-V-O phase, the problem exists of keeping the Mo-V-O phase and/or an Mo-V-Ti-O phase substantially free of other catalytically active impur- ities in order not to catalyze competing reactions at the same time. For this purpose, the invention provides that vanadium oxide and molybdenum oxide are mixed in the ratio of 0.7 to 1% by weight based on V2O5 and MoO3, the mixture is heated to a temperature above 500°C, the Mo-V- O phase is cooled, ground and then subjected to a reduc- ing treatment, and dispersed on a heated oxidic support (33), the dispersed material is then ground, then applied to a suitable macroscopic support (66) optionally with further additives, and calcined. Alternatively, the material dispersed on the oxidic support (33) can be kneaded with additives to form an extrudable compound, said compound can be extruded and then calcined so that the honeycomb bodies produced from said compound have crosspiece widths in the range from 0.1 to 0.6 mm and cell densities of 50 to 1200 cells per square inch.
