ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention provides in a process for pro- ducing a finely divided silica by spray drying in a spray drier a sprayable highly concentrated silica suspension, which is low in grit content the improvement in which the spray drying is carried out in the presence of a base or of a basic-reacting substance in an amount sufficient for complete or partial neut- ralization of the acid present in the suspension originating as acid used as a dispersing agent or of acid still present in redispersed filter cake or for alkaline adjustment to yield a dried silica with a pH value greater than 6Ø
