ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for the production of a methane-containing fuel gas in the simplest possible manner at low cost. This process comprises the steps of: forming a liquid mixture by mixing liquid water and liquid methanol at a weight ratio of 0.5 to 1.5:1; heating and evaporating said mixture; reacting said evaporated mixture under pressure of 10 to 50 bars in a reactor operated at an inlet temperature of 300 to 500°C, said reactor containing a fixed bed of a nickel catalyst containing Ni5MgA1209 with at least 5 percent by weight of zircon dioxide and 15 to 30 percent by weight of a high alumina cement, Ni5MgA1209 and Zr02 being in a weight ratio of 12:1 to 13:1 ; withdrawing the product gas from the reactor at a temperature of 500 to 700°C; and subsequently cooling the same.
