ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for producing a hydrophilic complex gel suitable for use in immobilization of microbial cells and also for medical use by mixing a water-soluble-polymer, preferably polyvinylalcohol, and a tetraalkoxysilane, preferably tetra- ethoxysilane, with stirring normally at room temperature at pH 3, to form a homogeneous complex sol, and by adding microbial cells possessing enzymatic activities, such as glucose isomerase activity, into the sol, and subsequently by adjusting the pH to give a complex lyogel or by drying the mixture to give a hydro- philic complex xerogel which complex lyogel or complex xerogel possesses more than 80% of the original microbial enzymatic activity and excellent physical properties and can be applied to an enzymatic reaction process in a batch reactor repeatedly and can also be used in a continuous column reactor.
