The invention relates to a process for the production of multicoat coatings, in which process a pigmented aqueous basecoat coating composition is used which contains as the film-forming material a water-thinnable emulsion polymer. The water-thinnable emulsion polymer is prepared in a two-stage emulsion polymerization. In the first stage a polymer is prepared having a glass transition temperature (T G1) of + 30 to + 110°C. In the second stage a mixture of monomers is polymerized in the presence of the polymer prepared in the first stage, which mixture, polymerized on its own, would give a polymer with a glass transition temperature (T G2) of - 60 to + 20°C. The hydroxyl value of the emulsion polymer is between 2 and 100.
La présente invention se rapporte à un procédé pour la fabrication de revêtements multicouches où est mise en oeuvre une composition de revêtement de base aqueuse et pigmentée, laquelle contient comme matière filmogène un polymère d'émulsion diluable à l'eau. Ledit polymère d'émulsion diluable à l'eau est produit dans une polymérisation en émulsion en deux étapes. Dans la première étape, un polymère est produit à une température de transition vitreuse (TG1) comprise entre +30 et +110 C. Dans la second étape, un mélange de monomères est polymérisé en présence du polymère produit dans la première étape. Ce mélange de monomères, s'il était polymérisé pour lui seul, donnerait un polymère à une température de transition vitreuse (TG2) comprise entre -60 et +20 C. L'indice d'hydroxyle du polymère d'émulsion est situé entre 2 et 100.
