A PROCESS FOR PRODUCING A NON-BLACKENED PHTHALIC ACID FROM THE CORRESPONDING TOLUALDEHYDE Abstract of the Disclosure: A process for producing a non-blackened phthalic acid from the corresponding tolualdehyde which comprises oxidizing the tolualdehyde with molecular oxygen or a molecular oxygen- containing gas in a liquid phase containing a lower aliphatic monocarboxylic acid as a solvent, and heavy metal salt(s) containing at least one manganese salt, especially both manganese and cobalt salts and at least one bromine com- pound as a catalyst, characterized in that the manganese salt is used in such an amount that the proportion of manganese atom in the reaction system is not more than 40 parts per million by weight based on the combined weight of solvent and water in the reaction system is disclosed. - 1 -
