Abstract of the Disclosure: A polyarylene sulfide having a low content of heavy metals and excellent heat stability is produced by mixing an alkali metal sulfide, water, and an organic polar solvent in the molar ratio of about 1:10 to 20:1 to 10 and by heating the mixture to remove water and then polymerizing the result- ing mixture with a polyhalogenated aromatic compound. Such a polyarylene sulfide is very useful for use in electronic components and automotive parts, etc.
