A process for the preparation of dispersions of water-soluble polymers, which comprises polymerizing a water-soluble monomer having a double bond under stirring in an aqueous salt solution in which the monomer is soluble but the polymer formed from the monomer is insoluble in the presence of a dispersant comprising a polyelectrolyte soluble in the aqueous salt solution to form fine polymer particles dispersed in the aqueous salt solution, characterized by adding at least one thickening inhibitor selected from among (A) polycarboxylic acids and salts thereof, (B) polyhydric phenols, (C) cyclic hydroxy carboxylic acids and salts thereof, (D) gluconic acid and salts thereof, (E) products obtained by reacting methoxyhydroquinone and/or a (meth)acrylic cationic monomer with a compound generating free radicals in an oxidizing atmosphere, (F) products obtained by reacting a (meth)acrylic cationic polymer with a compound generating free radicals in an oxidizing atmosphere, (G) products obtained by reacting a (meth)acrylic cationic polymer with an oxidizing agent, and mixtures of two or more of them.
Ce procédé de préparation de dispersions de polymères hydrosolubles consiste à polymériser un monomère hydrosoluble possédant une double liaison, en le brassant dans une solution aqueuse salées dans laquelle le monomère est soluble mais pas le polymère formé à partir du monomère, en présence d'un dispersant comprenant un polyélectrolyte soluble dans la solution aqueuse salée, afin de former des fines particules polymères dispersées dans cette solution. Ce procédé est caractérisé en ce que l'on ajoute au moins un inhibiteur de l'épaississement, choisi parmi (A) des acides polycarboxyliques et des sels de ceux-ci, (B) des phénols polyhydriques, (C) des acides hydroxycarboxyliques cycliques ou des sels de ceux-ci, (D) l'acide gluconique ou des sels de celui-ci, (E) des produits obtenus par réaction d'une méthoxyhydroquinone et/ou d'un monomère cationique (méth)acrylique, avec un composé produisant des radicaux libres dans une atmosphère d'oxydation, (F) des produits obtenus par réaction d'un polymère cationique (méth)acrylique avec un composé produisant des radicaux libres dans une atmosphère oxydante, (G) des produits obtenus par réaction d'un polymère cationique (méth)acrylique avec un agent d'oxydation, et des mélanges de deux ou plusieurs de ces inhibiteurs.
