Abstract of the Disclosure The present invention relates to a process for producing acrolein and methacrolein by oxidation of propylene and isobutyl- ene or tertiary butanol in oxygen-containing gas mixtures on shell catalysts especially produced from an inert support and a shell encompassing said support. The shell comprises an oxidic catalyst material containing the elements nickel, cobalt, iron, bismuth, phosphorus, molybdenum and tantalum or samarium and, when required, alkali or alkaline earth metal, in specific atomic ratios. This shell catalyst is obtained in a process in which a charge of the support moved mechanically by a gas stream injected from below while loosening it is sprayed from above in increasing amounts with a suspension of the starting material for the shell containing a binder and, when required, an expanding agent. The ratio of dispersion sprayed on to the dispersion agent removed again by the gas stream remains approximately constant. The coefficient of thermal expansion of the prestage as a dry powder must not differ from that of the support by more than 15%. The shell is consolidated by further motion. The material is dried in the gas, which continues to flow, and is tempered, when required, after decomposing any added expanding agent.
