A simple process is disclosed for producing alkoxymagnesium halogenides in a single step by stoichiometrically reacting magnesium that has been pre- activated by a magnesiumalkyl compound with an equimolar mixture of alkylhalogenide and an alkanol, preferably a .beta.- branched alkanol.
