Abstract of The Disclosure A process for the production of an alkoxy methylene malonic acid ester comprising reacting a malonic acid ester with an orthoformic acid trialkyl ester in the presence of a carboxylic acid or its anhydride and in the presence of a Lewis acid, the orthoformic acid trialkyl ester being initially present in a proportion of at least 1.4 mols per mol of malonic acid ester, to produce the desired alkoxy methylene malonic acid ester whilst removing, from the reaction mixture, the alcohol formed as bi- product. The formation of undesirable secondary products is almost completely prevented by such a process, which thus produces pure alkoxy methylene malonic esters in an economic manner.
