A process for producing ammonia synthesis gas from the reforming of hydrocarbons with steam in a primary re-former (1) equipped with a plurality of externally heated catalytic tubes and then together with air in a secondary reformer (2) is characterized in that the reaction of said hydrocarbons with said steam in said primary reformer (1) is performed at an operating pressure of more than 35 bar in the catalytic tubes, in that air is added to said secondary reformer in excess over the nitrogen amount required for ammonia synthesis and in that the excess of nitrogen is removed downstream the secondary reformer preferably by cryogenic separation or by molecular sieves of the TAS or PSA type. This process allows to obtain high synthesis gas production capacities and lower investment and energy costs.

L'invention concerne un procédé de production de gaz de synthèse d'ammoniac à partir du reformage d'hydrocarbures avec de la vapeur dans un reformeur primaire (1) équipé d'une pluralité de tubes catalytiques chauffés de l'extérieur et ensuite conjointement avec de l'air dans un reformeur secondaire (2). Ledit procédé est caractérisé en ce que la réaction desdits hydrocarbures avec ladite vapeur dans ledit reformeur primaire (1) est réalisée à une pression de fonctionnement supérieure à 35 bar dans les tubes catalytiques, en ce que de l'air est ajouté audit reformeur secondaire en excès par rapport à la quantité d'azote requise pour la synthèse d'ammoniac et en ce que l'excès d'azote est éliminé en aval du reformeur secondaire, de préférence par séparation cryogénique ou par tamis moléculaire de type TAS ou PSA. Ce procédé permet d'obtenir des capacités élevées de production de gaz de synthèse et des investissements et des coûts énergétiques plus faibles.
