- 35 - ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for producing an optically aniso- tropic carbonaceous pitch by heat treating a carbon- aceous heavy oil. A component of the heated material is allowed to settle, whereafter it is separated therefrom. The residuum is then heat treated until a pitch is formed having between 30 and 50 wt.% of a globular optically anistropic phase.
