Abstract An aromatic polyester amide having a nitrogen content of 0.001 to 5 percent by weight is produced by reacting (I) an alkanolamine having the formula (A): NH2-R1-OH in which R1 is a divalent aliphatic having 2 to 10 carbon atoms or an alicyclic group, such as an alkylene or a cycloalkylene having 5 to 12 carbon atoms, (II) mainly an aromatic dicarboxylic acid or its ester-forming derivative, such as terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid, naphthalenedicarboxylic acid and biphenylenedicarboxylic acid, and (III) mainly an aliphatic glycol or its ester-forming derivative, preferably having 8 or less carbon atoms, with one another at 150 to 300 degree C in the presence of a catalyst to effect amidation and esterification or interesterification and then effecting polycondensation while distilling out remaining monomers and eliminated matters at a reduced pressure. 0.01 to 30 moles of (I) is used per 100 moles of (II) and 90 to 300 moles of (III). The product is improved in view of thermal duration, in particular tensile elongation after treated at 120 degree C for 500 hours. It is useful as an engineering plastic material, for example for car parts and electric parts.
