9 ABSTRACT According to the present invention, astaxanthin can be industrially produced in a cheap and efficient manner, by culturing in a medium a microorganism belonging to the genus Phaffia having both resistance to at least one of citronellol, primaquine and hydroxydiphenyl and the ability to produce astaxanthin.
