Abstract of the disclosure: There is disclosed a process for producing .beta.- carotene which comprises (a) cultivating a micro-alga which is tolerant to an active oxygen generator and capable of producing .beta.-carotene to produce and accumulate .beta.-carotene, and (b) collecting the .beta.-carotene. The micro-alga is preferably Chlorella Pvrenoidosa.
