Abstract: The invention relates to a process for producing a sintered material suitable for use in particular as a sandblasting agent. The process involves mixing particles of aluminum dross residue and particles of serpentine-containing asbestos tailings to form a solids mixture and heating the solids mixture in an oxidizing atmosphere (e.g. air) at a temperature in the range of 1250-1600°C for a period of time long enough to form a sintered product. After cooling, the product is ground to an appropriate particle size, e.g. minus 70 Tyler mesh. The material has high fracture toughness and is suitable for sandblasting applications. The product generally contains regions of spinel and .alpha.-alumina sintered with regions of olivine.
