ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process is disclosed for producing carbonyl compounds by the reaction of an olefin with oxygen in the presence of water or water vapor and in the presence of a solid catalyst containing palladium metal or a compound thereof and one or more metals selected from the group consisting of tellurium, selenium, antimony and bismuth or a compound thereof. For example, butene may be used as olefin to produce methyl ethyl ketone. The catalyst is substantially free from halogen so that corrosion of apparatus is not encountered.
