Abstract A process for producing improved auto-crosslinking binders is described. The binders are based on amine modified epoxy compounds and are obtained through reaction of epoxy compounds with secon- dary amines, preferably alkanol amines, and monocarboxylic acids. Optionally the hydroxy groups of the reaction product are reacted partially or totally with an ?,B-unsaturated monoisocyanate. The binders have a double bond number of at least 0.5, preferably 0.8 to 2.5?,B-positioned double bonds, and are rendered water soluble through neutralisation with acids. Thereafter, they have an amine number of between 0.8 to 3Ø The binders are excellent vehicles for coating compositions applied by cathodic electrodeposition.
