ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of paving uses laying units breakable at rupture zones into individual stones and having recesses in opposite sides. A laying unit is gripped and lifted by a lifting mechanism extending into the recesses and is deposited adjacent an already laid unit with a gap therebetween and with the recesses in adjacent sides of the two units opposed to each other. After releasing the lifting mechanism, supplementing stones, each having substantially the same size and shape as one or a fraction of one or a multiple of the individual stones are inserted into the opposed recesses. The use of the lifting mechanism engaged in the recesses enables each unit to be accurately positioned and, if necessary, repositioned before it is released by the mechanism.
