ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention relates to a process for pro- ducing D-penicillamine from D,L-penicillamine. In particular the invention provides a process for producing D-penicillamine from D,L-penicillamine which comprises reacting a protected derivative of D,L-penicillamine with an optically active base separating the salt of said base and the derivative of D-peni- cillamine from the reaction mixture; converting the salt of said derivative of D-penicillamine to the derivative of D- penicillamine and converting the derivative of D-penicillamine to D-penicillamine, said optically active base being 1-pseudo- nor-ephedrine or a salt thereof.
