The present invention provides an essentially dry method for preparation of enhanced alumina powders. The first step involves rapid calcination of an aluminum compound to produce alumina powder. The alumina powder is mixed with solid ammonium carbonate and a small amount of water. This mixture heats itself although some external heat is helpful to produce am-monium aluminum hydroxycarbonate (dawsonite-type) NH4A1CO3(OH)2 upon curing which is then decomposed to produce enhanced alumina having a specific desired morphology and nano-sized dimensions.

La présente invention concerne une voie essentiellement sèche d'élaboration de poudres d'alumines améliorées. Une première opération consiste en une calcination rapide d'un composé d'aluminium aboutissant à la production d'une poudre d'alumine. On mélange la poudre d'alumine à un carbonate d'ammonium solide et à une petite quantité d'eau. Ce mélange chauffe spontanément, mais un peu d'endothermie facilitera quand même la production par cuisson de NH4AlCO3(OH)2, c'est-à-dire d'hydroxycarbonate d'ammonium et d'aluminium de type dawsonite. Le NH4AlCO3(OH)2 subit une décomposition qui donne une alumine améliorée présentant des caractéristiques spécifiques de morphologie et de dimensions nanométriques conformes aux attentes.
