23 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE High strength, high density carbon articles are produced mixing finely divided carbonaceous material and pitch binder having a coking value of at least 70 percent and forming the mixture into a shaped body. The shaped body is embedded within a gas-permeable envelope of finely-divided, non-reactive particles. The shaped body is compressed by applying a load upon the envelope while simultaneously heating the shaped body. The compression is sufficient to densify the shaped body and the heating raises the shaped body to a temperature sufficient to carbonize the pitch binder.
