Disclosed is a process for producing an isoprenoid compound by culturing a prokaryote host cell transformed with a vector containing a DNA which encodes a protein having an activity to catalyze a reaction to produce 2-C--methyl-D-erythritol 4-phosphate from 1-deoxy-D-xylulose 5-phosphate, and recovering the isoprenoid compound from the culture. The isoprenoid compound may be useful as a pharmaceutically active ingredient.
