ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An aqueous magnesium sulphate solution, e.g. from a main process using magnesium silicate as a starting material, is introduced into a circuit with ammonia gas and carbon dioxide to obtain cyrstals of magnesium carbonate trihydrate. The crystals are then freed, washed, dried and calcinated to obtain magnesium oxide. The produced carbon dioxide can be recycled to the circuit to act as a precipitation agent.
