Manufacturing of metal members, such as structural members for use in aircraft, automobile, etc., involving shot peening treatment of a surface of metal material, in which the fatigue characteristics can be enhanced without any marked change to the surface roughness of metal material between before and after shot peening treatment. Shot peening treatment of a surface of metal material is carried out with the use of a bombardment medium of 200 µm or less average particle diameter so that on the surface of metal material, the ratio of surface roughness after bombardment operation to surface roughness before bombardment operation is in the range of 0.8 to 1.5.

L'invention concerne la fabrication d'éléments métalliques, tels que des éléments structuraux destinés à être utilisés dans les avions, les automobiles, etc., faisant intervenir un traitement par grenaillage d'une surface du matériau métallique, les caractéristiques de tenue à la fatigue pouvant être améliorées sans modification sensible de la rugosité de surface du matériau métallique entre les états avant et après traitement par grenaillage. Ledit traitement par grenaillage d'une surface du matériau métallique est réalisé à l'aide d'une substance de bombardement d'un diamètre moyen de particules inférieur ou égal à 200 µm, de sorte que, à la surface du matériau métallique, le rapport de rugosité de surface après l'opération de bombardement à la rugosité de surface avant l'opération de bombardement se situe dans la plage de 0,8 à 1,5.
