ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Methanol and ammonia are produced in a single stream by generating a synthesis gas containing carbon oxides, nitrogen and oxygen, reacting the synthesis gas over a copper-containing methanol synthesis catalyst whereby to convert the carbon oxides and hydrogen incompletely to methanol and separating the methanol and passing the unreacted gas to a catalytic ammonia synthesis. The catalytic conversion of the synthesis gas is carried out in two stages, the first in the substantial absence of initially present water vapour and the second in the presence of sufficient water vapour to convert to carbon dioxide substantially all the carbon monoxide not converted to methanol.
